A visiting card is often the first physical impression someone has of you or your business. Yet most people treat it as an afterthought — slap on a logo, add a phone number, done. The result? A forgettable card that ends up in the bin.
Here’s what actually makes a business card work — based on thousands of cards we’ve printed at Printigly for startups, freelancers, and enterprises across Bangalore.

1. Less is More — Stop Cramming Information
The most common mistake we see: people try to fit everything on a 3.5″ × 2″ card. Phone, WhatsApp, email, website, Instagram, LinkedIn, address, tagline, and three product categories.
A cluttered card is a confusing card. Ask yourself: what’s the ONE thing I want this person to do? Call you? Visit your website? WhatsApp you? Design the card around that single action.
What to include:
- Your name (and designation if relevant)
- One phone number (preferably WhatsApp-enabled)
- Email address or website (not both, unless critical)
- Logo and business name
What to skip: full address (unless you’re a walk-in business), multiple social handles, lengthy taglines, QR codes that duplicate what’s already there.
2. Choose Your Finish Based on Your Brand Personality
The finish of your card communicates something before the recipient even reads a word. Here’s how different finishes align with different brand personalities:
| Finish | Brand Feel | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Matte Lamination | Sophisticated, premium | Lawyers, consultants, designers |
| Glossy Lamination | Bright, energetic, modern | Retail, photography, F&B |
| Velvet Touch | Ultra-luxe, tactile | High-end brands, boutiques |
| Spot UV | Bold contrast, premium | Agencies, startups, tech |
| Gold/Silver Metallic | Prestigious, trust-inspiring | Jewellery, real estate, finance |
| Transparent | Unique, conversation-starter | Creatives, influencers, tech founders |
| Kraft Paper | Eco-conscious, artisanal | Sustainable brands, organic products |
3. Use Both Sides
Most people print on one side and leave the back blank. That’s wasted real estate. The back of your card is a free second page.
Ideas for the back:
- A short list of your top 3 services
- A QR code that links to your portfolio, menu, or booking page
- A loyalty stamp (great for cafes, salons)
- A simple map to your location
- Your brand tagline in a bold, memorable font
Our two-sided printing is available on all card types. Just upload both sides when ordering.
4. Typography: Readability Over Creativity
Fancy fonts look great on screen and terrible on a 3.5″ card. Rules to live by:
- Minimum font size: 7pt for body text. Go smaller and people squint — or skip reading altogether.
- Maximum 2 font families. One for headings, one for body. Any more and it looks chaotic.
- High contrast. Dark text on light background, or light on dark. Avoid grey on white, gold on white, or similar low-contrast combos.
- Avoid all-caps for body text. It’s harder to read and feels like you’re SHOUTING.
5. Keep Enough White Space
White space isn’t wasted space. It’s breathing room. A card with generous margins and space between elements looks expensive and confident. A packed card looks desperate.
Aim for at least 3mm margin on all sides (this is also the safe zone for printing — text too close to the edge risks being cut off).
6. Bleed Area: Set Up Your File Correctly
If your design has a background color or image that extends to the card edge, you must set up a bleed area — typically 3mm beyond the trim line on all sides.
Without bleed, you’ll get white slivers on the edges of your printed card. Every professional printer (including us) requires bleed. When designing:
- Card size: 90mm × 55mm (standard India)
- With bleed: 96mm × 61mm
- Safe zone: Keep all text and logos 3mm inside the trim line
Not sure how to set this up? Our design team does it for free when you order through Printigly.
7. Order a Proof Before Going Bulk
Colors look different on screen vs. print. CMYK printing (used for most business cards) renders colors differently than your RGB monitor. A deep blue on screen can look purple in print. A bright red can appear slightly orange.
If your brand color is critical, always request a print proof before placing a large order. At Printigly, we offer sample prints on request — just WhatsApp us.
Bonus: Die-Cut Cards for Maximum Memorability
If you want your card to stand out in a stack of 50 others, consider a die-cut shape. We offer:
- Square cards — modern, symmetrical
- Circle cards — unique, great for headshots
- Leaf shape — perfect for eco/wellness brands
- Foldable cards — 4x the space, premium feel
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the standard business card size in India?
The standard size is 90mm × 55mm (3.5″ × 2.17″). This fits standard card holders and wallets. Some people opt for square (60mm × 60mm) or slim cards (90mm × 45mm) for variety.
What file format should I send for business card printing?
Preferred: PDF (with bleed), AI, or CDR. JPG/PNG also accepted at 300 DPI minimum. We accept files via WhatsApp or email — our team will check and confirm before printing.
How many business cards should I order?
For most professionals: 300–500 cards is a good starting point. They typically last 6–12 months of regular networking. Ordering more reduces the per-card cost significantly.
Can I get a sample before ordering in bulk?
Yes. WhatsApp us and we can arrange a sample proof print for your design before you place a full order.
How long does business card printing take?
Standard turnaround is 3–5 business days with delivery. Urgent/same-day printing is available in Bangalore — contact us on WhatsApp for availability.
